In November, the Rotary Peace Centers committee selected the 13th Rotary Peace Fellowship class. The class includes fellows from 39 different countries--including two from our own district. Please join us in congratulating Rachel Beecroft and Gada Roba!

Rachel will be studying in Queensland, Australia and Gada in Uppsala, Sweden.

Both Fellows are graduates of the University of Minnesota, Rachel in a self-designed major combining genocide studies, human rights, and business, and Gada in global studies. Both Fellows have significant overseas experience in human rights and have demonstrated their commitment to the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self.

Rachel studied abroad in Tanzania on a program addressing human rights issues in that country. After graduation she traveled to Haiti, where she worked in rescue and relief work. That was followed by participation on a vital water management project in India. Most recently, she was the full-time Program and Operations Coordinator at World Without Genocide, a human rights organization headquartered at William Mitchell College of Law. During her time in that position, she designed and developed a new program for high school and college students.

Rachel was sponsored by the Minneapolis University Rotary Club.

Gada studied in both Tanzania and Kenya while in college, working on critical human rights issues in both countries. In Kenya he interned with the Kenyan Commission on Human Rights and was involved in documenting and investigating the post-election violence that occurred in 2008. After graduation he worked as the Bilingual Associate Educator at both Wellstone and Roosevelt High Schools in Minneapolis, serving refugee and immigrant youth to facilitate their transition to their new country through mentoring. He also worked as the Executive Director of the American Oromo Community of Minnesota, assisting in developing infrastructure and resources for Minnesota’s expanding Oromo community. He is a Humphrey Policy Fellow and the recipient of the prestigious Virginia McKnight Binger Award in Human Services, given to those who are committed to serving others.

Gada was sponsored by the Minneapolis North Rotary Club.
