Thanks to Rotary's help, we are "tantalizingly close" to wiping out polio -- check out this Time article.

Dear Friends,

This update is to share with you my passion: to End Polio Now. The current Time magazine includes an article that gives a good account of the work Rotary International has been doing in an effort to eradicate polio.  It is worth your time to check it out.

Part of my role as a Rotary volunteer is to work with 12 Rotary districts in Zone 28 to inform the public that polio still exists and to help raise funds to be used in the polio eradication effort. Polio is an airplane flight away-- we need to encourage all citizens to keep their children immunized.

My passion around this work resulted from a trip to Nigeria, where I was able to place the Sabin vaccine drops on the tongues of children aged 5 years and younger, and then look in the eyes of parents who brought their children to be vaccinated.  Words cannot  explain the non-verbal appreciation expressed in the faces of those parents.

Polio still exists, though there is an ongoing effort between Rotary, UNICEF, WHO and the Center for Disease Control to eradicate the disease. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation joined the effort in 2007 and have been a major player in helping.  An end-game strategy is being developed and with some luck, we will see the end of this devastating disease in the not-too-distant future.

My request to you is to read the Time article and forward the link to everyone on your email list, as I am doing.  Thanks for your help.
